The modern X12 EDI editor your team actually wants to use

Open an 850, an 856, or a 997 and see structure instead of a wall of asterisks. EDI Studio parses, validates, and edits X12 files with a tree view, grouped errors, and in-place corrections.

The problem

EDI tooling hasn't meaningfully changed since 2005

Most teams still troubleshoot X12 in a text editor, counting delimiters by hand and guessing at element positions.

1,400 errors, zero context

Traditional validators emit a flat list, one line per failure. A single missing qualifier at the top of a file cascades into hundreds of downstream errors, and nothing tells you which one to fix first.

Raw EDI is unreadable

ST*850*0001~BEG*00*SA*4500123456**20260715~ means something specific. Reading it requires either an implementation guide open in another window, or years of memorised element positions.

Editing means a text editor and prayer

Correcting a segment by hand risks breaking the segment count in the SE trailer. One wrong character and the trading partner rejects the whole interchange.

The tool

Everything you need to work with X12, actually built in

Structured tree view

Interchange, group, transaction set, and segment nesting rendered as a navigable tree. Collapse what you don't care about and jump straight to the loop you do.

Grouped validation errors

Failures are collapsed by root cause rather than listed per occurrence, so a single upstream mistake reads as one item instead of four hundred.

In-place editing

Change an element and EDI Studio keeps the envelope honest — segment counts and control numbers stay consistent instead of silently drifting.

Element hover tooltips

Hover any element to see its X12 name, data type, and allowed values. No second monitor with a PDF spec on it.

Global search

Search across every segment in the interchange with match highlighting, then step between hits without losing your place in the tree.

Built-in validation rules

Envelope integrity, segment counts, control-number matching, and required-element checks run as you open the file.

3PL & warehouse ops

When a 940 doesn't turn into a 945, you need an answer before the truck leaves. Open both files side by side and find the mismatch in seconds.

Common questions

What EDI transaction sets does EDI Studio support?

EDI Studio reads any well-formed ANSI X12 interchange. Common sets — the 850 purchase order, 810 invoice, 856 advance ship notice, 997 functional acknowledgment, 940 warehouse shipping order, and 945 warehouse shipping advice — are recognised with element-level descriptions.

Does EDI Studio work offline?

Yes. It is a native desktop application. Your files are parsed locally and never uploaded, which matters when documents contain customer addresses, pricing, or purchase order data.

Is there a free trial?

A full-featured 7-day trial, no credit card required. Every feature is available during the trial.

Is this a replacement for EDI Notepad?

For reading, validating, and correcting X12 files it covers the same ground with a modern interface, native macOS and Windows builds, and grouped error reporting. See the full comparison.
